OceanWell x LVMWD Partnership
Securing Our Water Future with Innovative Solutions
Water is our most valuable resource, yet it is undervalued in economic and environmental decision-making. As climate change intensifies and weather becomes more upredictable, finding sustainable and innovative water solutions is more urgent than ever. That’s why Las Virgenes Municipal Water District (LVMWD) has partnered with OceanWell, a pioneering water technology company, to explore groundbreaking desalination solutions that can help ensure a resilient water supply for our community.
Revolutionizing Desalination with OceanWell
OceanWell is evolving the way we think about freshwater production. By using the natural hydrostatic pressure of deep-sea environments, OceanWell’s modular water farms use energy-efficient reverse osmosis technology to produce clean drinking water with minimal environmental impact. This approach reduces energy consumption—up to 40% less than traditional desalination methods—while eliminating harmful brine discharge, preserving marine ecosystems, and creating a sustainable water source for the future.
LVMWD’s Commitment to Innovation
As part of our ongoing efforts to diversify and secure our region’s water supply, LVMWD has partnered with OceanWell to pilot California's first Blue Water farm. This collaboration aims to address water scarcity by utilizing OceanWell's submerged filtration technology to produce clean drinking water with minimal environmental impact. In December 2023, this initiative received a $236,877 grant from the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation's "Pitch to Pilot" program, underscoring its potential to revolutionize sustainable water sourcing.
Understanding the True Value of Water
The importance of sustainable water management is underscored in the recent report from Boston Consulting Group, What Is Water Really Worth?. The report highlights how water is often undervalued, leading to unsustainable use and underinvestment in critical infrastructure. By recognizing water’s true economic and ecological significance, we can drive smarter policies and investments that secure long-term water resilience.
