Facility Tours

An overview of a wastewater treatment facility with students gathered by a school bus nearby, mountains in the background.

There is an entire universe your water passes through before reaching your taps, and its journey gets even more interesting when it leaves your homes and businesses.

LVMWD and JPA welcome you as special guests on that journey with our facility tours! Join us to learn about everything that goes into ensuring you always have safe, clean water when you need it.

Guests have the option of two tours:

Tapia Water Reclamation Facility:  Nestled deep within the Santa Monica Mountains off Malibu Canyon Rd., the region's wastewater flows here to undergo tertiary treatment to transform into clear, odorless recycled water currently used for irrigation. Visitors will learn in depth about what it takes to turn toxic sewage into a useful water supply.  This tour is primarily outdoors and involves a moderate amount of walking. A hat and sunscreen are advised!

A group is learning about the natural water cycle at an interactive exhibit, with a presenter and informative graphics.

Pure Water Demonstration Facility: Set against the Calabasas hills at LVMWD's HQ, the Demo Facility houses the advanced purification process, which purifies recycled water to create a pure, reliable new source of drinking water for the region. Visitors will learn about the JPA's largest and most innovative project to date here, where we pick up where we left off at Tapia and finally bring our water full cirlce. This tour is primarily indoors with minimal walking, and includes a taste test of the purified water at the end.

Both tours can be tailored to fit your scheduling needs, however they typically take about one hour each. No special PPE or work attire needed.
