Las Virgenes Municipal Water District Statement on COVID-19 - Tap Water is Still Safe to Drink
    • The coronavirus has no impact on the quality or supply of your tap water. As always, your tap water is both available and safe.
    • While it’s always advisable to stock bottled water at home in case of emergencies that disrupt the water supply, Las Virgenes Municipal Water District (LVMWD) does not expect this health outbreak to disrupt service to our customers.
    • LVMWD is committed to providing its customers with safe and reliable water.  LVMWD relies 100% on imported water from the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California.  Read their FAQ regarding Covid-19.  This water is treated at the Joseph Jensen Treatment Plant where it undergoes ozonation, filtration and finally chloramination to eliminate pathogens, which includes viruses. This water is then frequently tested for quality throughout our distribution system ensuring the safest and highest quality water is being delivered to our customers. This treated water represents the vast majority of water in our Las Virgenes Reservoir which is then further treated in our Westlake Filtration Plant before being delivered to our customers. This ensures safe drinking water for all our customers.
    • LVMWD delivers water of the highest quality and meets all stringent state and federal drinking water requirements. California State Water Resources Control Board Fact Sheet on Water Safety  This information is detailed in the agency’s 2018 Water Quality Report, available for review on our website. Review the 2018 WQR
    • LVMWD conducts more than 11,000 water quality tests annually to ensure your water meets rigorous drinking water standards. Dedicated LVMWD staff, state certified and highly trained, collect these samples throughout the distribution system and then perform all tests in our state certified testing lab at Tapia Water Reclamation Facility.

LVMWD has had to manage an excess of disinfectant and so called flushable wipes in our sewer system. These wipes DO NOT break down in our collection system and instead must be removed or they can cause sanitary sewer overflows and pump failures. It is critical that we keep the wipes in the trash and our sewers flowing and the pipes clear.

For our Business Customers - Helping You Get Back to Business

LVMWD advises businesses to flush their buildings water system before resuming activity if they have been largely inactive or dormant.

    Flush Pipes

As businesses begin to reopen after a long shutdown, many schools, offices, restaurants, commercial properties, office complexes, and any buildings that have remained unoccupied have stagnant water in their internal plumbing systems.

While the Las Virgenes MWD staff has been regularly testing the public water system throughout the pandemic to ensure the water in the public water system is safe, private water service pipelines from the water meters to the point of use within each building may not be.

Stagnant water is a breeding ground for Legionella bacteria and for lead and copper, from older pipes in older buildings, to leech into your plumbing system.

We ask that ALL dwellings that have remained unoccupied and vacant since the pandemic began to thoroughly flush your water by allowing the cold water to reach proper chlorine residual levels, and for your hot water tank/boiler to completely drain and hot water again flows from your tap.
